Llandudno is a great base from which you can explore some of North Wales most popular attractions. If you like your tours to be organised then Llandudno has lots of daily coach trips available to the very best attractions. If doing your own thing is more your style then you’ll ideally need a car to get to the attractions as public transport in North Wales isn’t great. However you decide to explore Llandudno is the ideal base with a great range of accommodation mixed with two terrific beaches.
A few miles from Llandudno lies to town of Conwy with its imposing medieval castle. Conwy Castle was built during the Middle Ages by the English as part of their conflict with the local Welsh population. Conwy Castle is an imposing structure that dominates the estaury of the River Conwy and the walls of its town. The castle is open throughout the year and offers a great insight into the local history as well as great views of the surrounding area.
The Welsh Mountain Zoo is located just 5 miles from Llandudno in the nearby town of Colwyn Bay. The zoo is the only animal zoo in North Wales and is a great day out for the whole family. Visitors can walk around at their leisure and take in the sea lions, bears, and other animals. If the kids need to burn off some energy then the fun park has a number of slides and climbing frames great for the purpose.
Llandudno is ideally situated for a day out to Mount Snowdon, the tallest mountain in England and Wales. An ideal way to reach the summit is via the Snowdon Mountain Railway which takes you from the base station in the town of Llanberis to the summit. The railway is a great journey that takes approximately 4 hours as a round trip and offers spectacular views on clear days of the mountains of North Wales.
Back on the ground in Llanberis another great attraction is the Electric Mountain Visitor Centre. The centre was opened to allow visitors to learn about this modern engineering feat of a power station in a mountain. Entrance to the visitor centre is free and once inside you can pay a small fee to take a tour into the mountain and see the huge pumps operating and learn how the power station works.
Closer to Llandudno in the Conwy valley is the wonderful Bodnant Garden. The garden is a mixture of formal and informal gardens laid out over 80 acres. Visitors can explore the Italiante terraces or take the paths down to the Dell. Bodnant Garden is a great place to spend an afternoon enjoying the peace and solitude of nature at its best.
To the south of Snowdon is the town of Blaenau Ffestiniog and located just outside the town are the Llechwedd Slate Caverns. Take a journey on the old slate trains into the deep underground caverns and learn how slate mining was a major industry in North Wales during the 19th century.
Also located in Blaenau Ffestiniog is the Ffestiniog Railway which was once the old method of carrying slate to the docks before distribution around the world. In the 1940’s the railway was closed as the slate industry declined but it was reopened in the 1950’s by a group of volunteers and now serves as one of the regions most popular tourist attraxtions. Take a ride on the train to Porthmadog through the stunning Welsh countryside.
