The Spectacular Victoria Falls

November 11th, 2008 · No Comments · Travel

by Andrew Muigai

As you walk up to Victoria Falls’ tourist viewing area, the panoramic view of the world’s largest water curtain is breathtaking. Referred to by the locals as Mosi oa Tunya (the smoke that thunders),the 1,708 metres wide waterfall drops about 128 metres into Bakota Gorge -which runs 120 metres across- forming dense mist that covers the whole area. In deed, the water falls with such a high velocity as to create a thick mist that rises over 150 meters.

Victoria Falls are considered one of the natural wonders of the world. The waterfalls are situated on Zambezi River, separating Zimbabwe and Zambia, though the larger part is in Zimbabwe. The falls consist of five “falls”. The Devil’s Cataract, Rainbow Falls, Main falls and the Horseshoe Falls are all located in Zimbabwe while the Eastern Cataract is placed in Zambia.

The Devil’s Cataract, whose name is derived from the close by island in the Zambezi River, is about 70 metres deep. Main Falls is, on the other hand, the most spectacular of all the falls with water falling 93 metres into the gorge below. Shaped like a horse shoe, Horseshoe Falls is about 95 metres deep and it offers excellent view of Rainbows Falls. A spectacular view of the Cataract Falls can be found by descending 73 steps into the close by Eastern Cataract Falls situated on the Zambian side of Victoria Falls.

You can approach Victoria falls from both the Zambian and Zimbabwean sides, though the Zambia side is considered less splendid. The best season for viewing Victoria falls is when the water volume decreases midway through the dry season. Towards the end of the dry season, you will find the falls less thrilling since the water flow is at its lowest.

The Zambezi basin above the falls experiences a rainy season from late November to early April, and a dry season the rest of the year. During the month of April when rainfall is highest, Victoria Falls has over 500 million litres of water falling over its crestline each minute. The minimum flow occurs in November and it is about a tenth of the April flow.

Victoria Falls is twice in height the size of North America’s Niagra Falls and more than twice the width of Horseshoe Falls that is also located in North America. In both dimensions, Victoria Falls is second to South America’s Iguazu Falls. The falls are part of two national parks: Zimbabwe’s Victoria Falls National Park and Zambia’s Zambezi National Park. Victoria Falls National Park situated along the southern banks of the Zambezi River offers the most spectacular views.

The best months to go and see the waterfalls are July and August, which fall midway through the dry and cold season. During this season, temperatures range from 5 degrees at night to 20 degrees celsius.

Some of the fun activities you can undertake at Victoria Falls include white water rafting at the gorges, and guided canoeing safaris either on the upper Zambezi River or further downstream from the falls. Still in the Zambezi River, the Sunset cruises give visitors an opportunity to observe elephants crossing the Zambezi, and also see hippo ponds, thus a nice adventure. Along the banks of the Zambezi, you can also participate in game fishing.

The Zambezi River Bridge towers over the gorges downstream from the waterfalls, and connects Zimbabwe and Zambia. Cecil Rhodes, the 6th Prime minister of Cape Colony is credited as the brains behind this bridge. His idea was to construct a railway line connecting Cape Town and Cairo, through Zambezi river. Walking the 250 metres across this bridge is a thrilling adventure. The bridge’s main arch spans 156.5 metres, and stands 128 metres above the river’s lower water mark in the gorge below. Professor Francis Darwin, the son of Charles Darwin officially opened this bridge in 1905.

Victoria Falls is a UNESCO World Heritage site and it was named after the queen of England by Scottish explorer David Livingstone in 1855. To get to the falls, visitors can travel by road, cruising about 440 km northwest from Bulawayo or through Kazungula Border Post. The Victoria Falls Border Post is just a few metres from the falls and can be accessed by road from Zambia. There is also the alternative of using Victoria Falls’ international airport that has services from Harare and many regional and international destinations.

Tips To Choice your Goal

November 11th, 2008 · No Comments · Travel

by Ada Denis

Everyone trips at a different value. What we mean by that is that some like to take it comfortable and calmly feel what they can while others want to see as much as they can in the shortest attainable time and still others are after excitement and tons of Adrenalin.

You need to be aware of the type of traveller you are and make sure you plan a vacation and choose travel companions who are of the like mind. Go to the wrong place with the wrong people and it will not be what you had desired it would be. Can you imagine getting took up in a white water rafting vacation down the Yukon River in mid-winter when all you wanted to do was see local native artifcats and take pictures for the bird-watching society back house?

So if this is your basic time traveling then we suggest you to take it easy. Choose a destination that will assist you ease into travel. Take you time in planing a trip that you will delight but that will also teach you about travel and what to expect from it.

Be alert that the biggest difference in destinations is not whether they are from East or West but rather if they are rich or poor. If you are not ready to face abject poorness and the moody and mental outcomes it can have on you then be suggested NOT to go somewhere where you may be faced up by real poorness - it can be aching! Know yourself and your destination before you go. No amount of money, knowledge, ground or forethought can shield you from the effects of real poverty if you are not used to it.

Do some base explore before you leave home. There are a wide array of trip guides available. We do not propose you go and buy them. What we advise is borrowing them from your local library first. Find the one that fits you best (Fodor, Blue Leads, Alone Planet, etc.) and the destination you are interested in (if you don’t find the right on in the puts off ask the librarian and they may just get it in for you). Once you know your destination and the guide you like then go and buy it but not before - you will waste matter a lot of time if you buy before you try.

In the poorer countries you goes through will be more people-centred and in the brighter nations more platform directed. For example: a travel to to Paris will probably go around around places (Museums, Palaces and events where there are large groups of non-interacting people) while a trip-up to India may be more aligned to meeting the people and seeing rural towns, temples, etc. where you will be with large groups of interacting people.

Do not bring in your ethnical or sacral prejudices with you when you travel! You will be going into cultures that have very different ideas on morals, manners, politics and religion. Be aware that their feeling are as validated as yours; just different. To move some other can be seen crude and can even, in the wrong place, be very dangerous. Listen before you speak.

Always check out the Travel Alerts that are visible from your governments before selecting a destination.

Choose Appropriate One for Bed and Breakfast

November 10th, 2008 · No Comments · Travel

by Ada Denis

A bed and breakfast is ordinarily an exceptionally decent place to spend the night, as most are remodeled old homes or houses. Some of these homes have been restored to represent the way they were originally developed and contain grateful carpentry, wood floors, spacious brick fireplaces and other designs of the era in which they were built.

Most put up breakfast in the morning, which consists of a complete meal with breakfast meat, eggs, toast or biscuits, roasted potatoes, hotcakes and waffles, coffee, juice, etc., while others only allow a continental breakfast, consisting of coffee, juice and doughnuts. Then, some supply no breakfast at all, but even call themselves a bed and breakfast. The morning meal is usually involved in the room rate.

As you can see, each bed and breakfast can be otherwise and even the Bed and Breakfast Connections have no included definition of what they are. When placing a reservation, be sure you realise what accommodations they offer, or better yet get a recommendation from someone who is knowing with that proper bed and breakfast.

Normally, we believe of a bed and breakfast as being a beautiful house with all the comforts to ‘cater to our every need’. A Jacuzzi or whirlpool/hot tub may be equipped, a suite of rooms with your own individual bath is available instead of just one room and joining to the Internet is also available. Depending on location, recreational activities such as biking, canoeing, golf and skiing are close.

If you are looking for a romanticist pickup, a weekend at a bed and breakfast can filling the bill. Many offer up a ’special romance package’, which means the weekend is professionally planned. Be sure you see what the package lets in and the price. The owner of the bed and breakfast should be capable to recommend romantic restaurants so you will be able to make advance reservations. They can also suggest other romantic locations in the area that might interest you.

For those so ready, there are afraid bed and breakfasts, which arrogate to have shades living in the house. The houses are haunted by spirits of previous owners, most of whom went a terrible death and their spirits have lingered in the house ever since. Each home has its’ own story about the ghosts and visitors have reported hearing strange makes noise, actually seeing the ghosts, etc. There are around forty of these haunted places crossways the United States.

A slay secret weekend can be fun at a bed and breakfast. Approximately thirty lodges around the state feature this type of weekend, took part in by the clients. The object is to find out who committed the murder by following cues given to each guest. The weekend is spent investigating the criminal offense and, before leaving on Sunday, the murderer is disclosed.

In order to feel the pure bed and breakfast, take time to plan and search all one on your list. Be sure it offers what you are looking for and make sure the price is right. There is constantly one that will acceptable your budget. It is suggested that you project on expending more such than one night to get the full profit of your check.

Bear On in head, a bed and breakfast is a great way to get away

Explore the Kenyan Wilderness with Horse Riding Safaris

November 10th, 2008 · No Comments · Travel

by Straus Karl Heinz

One of the most unique and interesting adventure activity to engage in Kenya is the horseback riding. Horseback riding can be combined and made part of your holiday activity or done exclusively as a horseback safari for those who are experienced drivers.

Many horseback riding routes avoid the popular tourist routes used by vans or routes that go to lodges. Life seems to move at a slower pace as one gets alienated from the brisk modern world. The camps are very comfy and are managed by a highly experienced staff. You need to experience the thrill of watching the graceful antelopes run along you or mighty sound of the roaring lion out in the wild.

As part of the excitement, one gets to ride through the mountains and forests, into open savanna and through escarpments and waterholes that are teeming with wildlife such as wildebeest and zebras You might. also get to see elephants eating quietly. All of this excitement is experienced as you take on a horseback safari in Kenya.

Rides are done in the shadows of Mt. Kilimanjaro in the Chyulu Hills - smoothly shaped, grass covered rolling country rising to 7,000 ft., in the Great Rift Valley, Lake Naivasha area, Masai Mara Reserve, Loita Hills and Mt. Kenya Area in Laikipia and Amboseli National Park.

Breeds used include Somali-Arab cross breeds and well schooled thoroughbred horses and cross polo ponies. Experts as well as beginners will find these horses suitable for them. For those with little experience with horse, they wont be disappointed because they will get to ride on Patent Safety horses that have been trained for these kinds of people.

Laikipia Horseriding in Kenya

An enormous variety of wild animals is found in the Laikipia area in Kenya. These also includes the Big Five. It is also the area that we have the Jackson Hartebeest and also home to various rare species of wild animals including the Beisa Oryx, Reticulated Giraffe, Somali Ostrich and the Grevy Zebra.

Mount Kenya Safari Club

Mount Kenya Safari club has a magnificent view of Mount Kenya and it has 115 fantastic and luxurious rooms that are set over 100 acres of land that offer the guest a luxurious level of comfort, adventure and relaxation. Some of the famous guests that have visited this place include Winston Churchill and Bing Cosby.

Mount Kenya Safari club has a choice of 7 thoroughbreds from which to choose from and the guests can ride them any time always in the company of one or more grooms. Children under the age of 12 years are not allowed to ride them.

The Region of Loisaba

Loisaba is located between the border of Northern Frontier and Laikipia. This game ranch is located a few km away from the equator and is a land of magnificent beauty where the farm management and the locals including the Masai and Samburu work closely together to preserve the environment and the wildlife that exists here.

Horseback-ride through the wild canyons of the two great rivers that span the vast property. Loisaba is immense: bigger than ten of the world’s fully-fledged nations. You could take months exploring this land and never encounter the same view twice. On horseback it is possible to get unusually close to wildlife and our stable of horses have all been reared from birth in the bush so are quite accustomed to its presence. It is however a reasonable degree of riding skill required.

Riding through the Amboseli National Park

This national park is located on the North West side of Mount Kilimanjaro, on the border of Tanzania. A company by the name of Ride Kenya offers horse riding tours in this game-rich park in East Africa. The 6 night tour starts at the Kenyan Tanzania border and passes through the Amboseli National park and finally ends at Chyulu hills.

Horse riding through the Amboseli will not leave you bored. There are many wild animals to see including elephants, buffaloes, cheetahs, zebras, wildebeest and lions. The view at Amboseli is awesome because the park is located on the foot of Mount Kilimanjaro.
